POWER! Stokely Carmichael

The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (AHCAC) will present in conjunction with Conspicuous Fire Productions, LLC, “POWER! Stokely Carmichael”, a play written and performed by Meshaun Labrone. Directed by Jennifer Knight.  This blistering one-man show, set in the summer of 1966 introduces multiple characters that Stokely Carmichael encountered during the days of the Civil Rights Movement. On June 23, 1966, an unknown protégé of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. named Stokely Carmichael prepared to engage in a standoff with state police during the March Against Fear in the city of Canton, Mississippi. While prepping the new marchers that arrived late Carmichael warns them that, “If you are out here for an exciting time, you need to go to the movies. People die out here.” Those marchers during this production are the audience members. The production is tense, funny, heartbreaking, informative, engaging and non-stop entertaining. Witness the resurrection of the leading voice of the Black Power Movement, Stokely Carmichael, in this most timely production.

Prompted by the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin and inspired by his time working as a corrections officer at a Florida maximum security prison, Meshaun Labrone wrote “POWER!” Stokely Carmichael. The play takes an absurdist journey into the mind of revolutionary Stokely Carmichael.
